Yasuke (Afro-Samurai)
The real Afro Samurai, Yasuke!
At least, my interpretation of him. He was an African samurai, believed to be from Mozambique, who served initially as a missionary for a short period in feudal Japan in the 16th century. He became a retainer and koshō (sword-bearer) for the "Great Unifier", daimyō Oda Nobunaga. Briefly documented history has him traveling from Mozambique, to India, to Japan. But, it is unknown of he was ever a slave prior to his stay in Japan. There is so little known about this figure that his original name is unknown! Nevertheless... Africa still leaves its mark on the world!
